Up until now Peter Althaus has only ever made a straight Merlot for the immediate friends and family of the vineyard. The 2004 vintage changed this with the vineyard being blessed with an outstanding batch of Merlot fruit. Peter had little choice but to make this into single varietal wine and in our opinion the master has done it again. On his first commercial release of this wine, we already consider it the finest Merlot we have seen from Australia and after seeing the Domaine A Cabernet sSauvignon give the Chateau Latour a run for its money recently, I wonder how this will fair against Petrus? Very limited and very good.
